Afrobeat Music Needs To Be Added To Awards Category – Kelvyn Boy Advises Industry Players (Video)

Burniton Music signee, Kelvyn Boy, is urging industry players to create a category for the Afrobeat genre in award schemes.

According to him, the Afrobeats genre birthed by Hilife, is climbing fast in the music space and needs to be stand alone as an award category instead of being joined with others.

The ‘Mea’ hit maker said Ghanaians are not championing enough for the fruits of Ghana’s Hi-life genre.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM on Friday, the ‘Ginger’ hit maker, who released his ‘T.I.M.E’ album later in June, urged musicians to uphold the hi-life legacy.

Kelvyn Boy believes music pundits do not have hi-life at heart if the biggest award scheme, Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA’s) does not include Afro beats as a category.

This is not the first time Kelvyn Boy is demanding Afro-beat be made a category in award schemes. He first made the call while performing at the 9th edition of the Ghana Meets Naija concert.

The ‘Ginger’ artiste explained at the event that people are fighting over Dance-hall and Hip-hop and forget Afrobeat, which is African originated.

Kelvyn Boy added if the awards schemes do not have a category for something that is ours “we are lost as an industry and as a nation.”

“We did Afrobeats 50 years back before Nigerians started. It got influenced by hi-life and a lot of songs we jam to now, are Afrobeats songs. Imagine we don’t even have our own Afrobeats,” he told Andy Dosty host of Daybreak Hitz.

He added, Ghanaians should not wait for other countries to carry the genre like Nigerians have done before they own up to it.
