Hannah Gadsby, born in 1978, is a talented Australian comedian, writer, and actor.
Hannah Gadsby was born at North West Regional Hospital in Burnie, Tasmania, and spent their early years in Smithton, a small town on the remote north-west coast of Tasmania. Growing up as the youngest of five children, Gadsby attended Smithton High School from 1990 to 1995. During her final year, she experienced a nervous breakdown while attending Launceston College. Gadsby later pursued higher education, initially studying at the University of Tasmania in Hobart before transferring to the Australian National University, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in art history and curatorship in 2003.
Following her studies, Gadsby worked in bookshops in Canberra and served as a projectionist at an outdoor cinema in Darwin. She also spent two years engaged in agricultural work, picking vegetables and planting trees along the east coast of Australia. Gadsby faced adversity during this period, experiencing homelessness and health challenges, including acute pancreatitis that required hospitalization.
Gadsby career took off in Australia when she won the national final of the Raw Comedy competition for new comedians in 2006. Gadsby gained international recognition with their show Nanette, which premiered on Netflix in 2018 and went on to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and a Peabody Award.

In 2019, Gadsby embarked on an international tour with their show Douglas, which was later released as a special on Netflix in 2020. Her contributions to the entertainment industry were acknowledged in 2021 when they received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tasmania.
In 2006, Gadsby entered the Raw Comedy competition, ultimately emerging as the winner. Their success led them to participate in the So You Think You’re Funny? competition at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where they secured second place. Gadsby’s debut solo show, titled Hannah Gadsby is Wrong and Broken, garnered critical acclaim, earning them the Best Newcomer Award at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
