The incident occurred on January 23, 2023, when a Seattle police officer, Kevin Dave, driving at a speed of 4mph (119 km/h), struck and killed Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old graduate student, on a crosswalk. Kandula was propelled more than 100 feet in the air by the hit before she passed away on the spot.

Auderer Body Cam captured audio communication between him and union president Mike Solan as he was responding to the incident. Solan was silent, but Audere could be heard making jokes about the woman’s passing.
Daniel Auderer is heard arguing that Officer Dave was not “out of control” when he killed Kandula on the footage that captured their audible interaction. Then, before laughing, Audere was heard saying, “She is Dead.”

Auderer continued to giggle throughout the call, misrepresenting the young woman’s age, while Sloan remained unheard. He stated: “No, it’s a regular person. Yeah. Just write a check. Eleven thousand dollars. She was 26 anyway. She had limited value.”
The video was found “in the ordinary course of business by a department employee. who, concerned about the nature of words heard on that video, correctly elevated their concerns via their chain of command,” according to a statement from the Seattle police department on Monday.
The case is being looked into by the Office of Police Accountability, according to the agency.

Some lives are valued and some aren’t, and it doesn’t look good. I’m just feeling angry and sad for the family. Could you imagine that being your loved one that they’re mocking?”
