James Robert Cooter is an American football coach who oversees the passing game for the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

Before to this, he worked as the New York Jets’ running backs coach and the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator from 2015 to 2018.

Jim Bob Cooter went to the University of Tennessee and Lincoln County High School in Fayetteville, Tennessee, where he played quarterback as a backup for the Tennessee Volunteers football team.

Cooter worked for Tennessee as a graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008. The Indianapolis Colts then employed him as an offensive assistant, and he served them from 2009 to 2011.

With Peyton Manning’s help, Cooter joined the Denver Broncos as an offensive assistant in 2013 after serving as the offensive quality control coach for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012.

In 2014, the Lions hired Cooter to teach their quarterbacks. After the season, they turned down the Chicago Bears’ request to interview him for the role of offensive coordinator.

With the midseason firing of previous offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, the Lions elevated Cooter to offensive coordinator for the 2015 campaign.

Prior to the Lions’ announcement that they will not be extending his contract on January 1, 2019, he continued to serve as their offensive coordinator.
