Stevie’s blindness during birth did not prevent him from achieving all that he has today. As a child prodigy, he signed with Motown’s Tamla label at the age of 11. Stevie Wonder’s Early Life, School & Career

He was born on 13 May 1950 as Stevland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, Michigan. Stevie was the third of five children born to Lula Mae Hardaway and Calvin Judkins. He was born six weeks earlier and which resulted in retinopathy of prematurity (a condition in which the growth of the eyes is aborted and causes the retinas to detach). So, Stevie was born blind.

As a child, Stevie was a fan of music. He started playing the piano, harmonica, and drums. Stevie also formed a band with a friend which they called “Stevie and John”. They mostly played on street corners and occasionally at parties and dances.

Stevie Wonder attended Fitzgerald Elementary School in Detroit and then Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing, Michigan. In 1961, Stevie signed with Motown’s Tamla where he released his first single “I Call It Pretty Music, But the Old People Call It the Blues” (1962). He has also released over 20 studio albums and sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Stevie has also won 25 Grammys and was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Some of his popular songs include “Isn’t She Lovely”, “Superstition” and “I Just Called to Say I Love You”.
