He won the senior 5000 m title in the 2003 World Championships at the age of eighteen, setting a championship record in the process.
Later, he won a bronze medal at the 2006 World Indoor Championships and went on to compete for Kenya in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Kipchoge won silver medals at the 2007 World Championships, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
He finished in the top five of the 5000-meter race five times at the World Championships.
