Is Catholicism different from Christianity? Are there differences? Catholics are Christians and the truth is, not all Christians are Catholics. Catholicism is therefore a branch of Christianity with over 1.3 billion members. A Christian can be a Catholic, Protestant, Gnostic, Mormon, Anglican, Orthodox, Evangelical or any follower of Jesus Christ. Catholics on the hand follow the Catholic religion as transmitted through the succession of Popes (leaders of the Catholic Church). There are many similarities between Catholics and Christians however, there are a few differences and in the list below, we will look at some of the big differences. However, as discussed earlier, Catholics are also Christians since they also believe in Jesus Christ. Now, let us look at some of the differences below.

  1. Just like Christians, Catholics believe in one God. However, there are other additions like Apostles and Nicene’s Creed states beliefs.
  2. Christians believe that people can choose between Heaven and Hell. However, Catholics believe that there is a third place for those who desire purification, known as Purgatory.
  3. Christians believe in the standard Bible whiles Catholics have other additional books like “the book of Enoch”, etc
  4. Catholics believe that Saints like Peter, Mary, etc can intercede for a person during prayers however, Christians only pray through Jesus Christ.
  5. During baptism, a child can be allowed in Catholicism however, Christians only allow people who can agree to baptism.
  6. In Catholicism, we can meet deacons, monks, nuns, priests, and bishops, while in Christianity, we meet priests, bishops, ministers, monks, and nuns.
  7. Catholics use the rosary during prayers, and recitation of the Apostle’s creed whiles Christians do not do both.
  8. Catholics consider the Virgin Mary to be the highest-ranked saint and the leader of all saints, while Christians believe that she was a sinner just like everyone else.
